Karma Yoga Prenatal Classes

As a Woman Lives, So Shall She Birth ...

Karma Yoga will offer Metro Detroit’s first prenatal yoga program, beginning May 15th, 2012. This ongoing class will allow women to begin the physical and spiritual journey toward childbirth with this ancient, graceful and powerful time-tested system of yoga.

“The nine months of gestation constitute the most consequential period of our lives, permanently influencing the wiring of the brain and functioning of organs such as the heart, liver and pancreas. The conditions we encounter in utero shape everything about us from potential diseases, anxiety & depression, temperament to intelligence”.
How the First Nine Months (In Your Mother's Womb) Shapes the Rest of Your Life, Annie Murphy Paul, Time Magazine, Sept 22, 2010

A mother has the most influence over her child during pregnancy more than at any other time. As parents, she and her partner will be prepared mentally, physically and spiritually for every challenge they meet on the greatest adventure of their lives. With techniques such as partner yoga and meditations, prenatal yoga can take the parents away from the stress and pressure of daily life to a space in which they can focus entirely on their inner selves, each other and this pregnancy.

Through community, yoga, breath work and meditation, moms-to-be can live in calm, radiance, joy and good health. Imagine the atmosphere, or "vibration", in which baby will enter the world! We can literally shift the human race on the planet by birthing the highest souls possible!

The Khalsa Way

When it comes to pregnancy and childbirth, nothing can prepare a woman's body, mind and spirit better than pregnancy yoga. Yoga is already well-known for reducing stress and toning the body, but for an expecting mother it can do so much more. For the last 20 years, instructors in The Khalsa Way, through time and experience, have researched and perfected the technology and application of pregnancy yoga. Some of the benefits of Khalsa Way:

  • Increased endurance, muscle tone and strength (very important in labor and birth)

  • Less stress and more balanced hormones, which reduces symptoms like morning sickness and allows better nutritional absorption for mother and baby.

  • Breath control and improved nervous system, which calms a woman's mind and allows better focus, endurance and pain management.

  • A deeper and more meaningful spiritual connection between self and between mother and child during pregnancy, labor and parenting.

Mindful Mamas
Mamas and mamas-to-be connect and support one another using mindfulness, positive parenting, holistic health and yoga to bring greater peace to their lives. Gentle postures, breath work, vocal toning and meditation will be explored to cultivate flexibility, calm and confidence in preparation for labor and childbirth.
