This WEEKEND INTENSIVE will afford students the opportunity to deepen their practice and cultivate balance. As an attendee, you will traverse a wide-range of asanas over the weekend, developing your standing poses, hip-openers, core-strengtheners, backbends, and (maybe, just maybe) arm-balances. All are welcome to attend. Beginning students will be taught modifications while advanced students will be given space to travel deeper.

FRIDAY EVENING: SETTING THE TONE

This practice will kick-start the weekend by providing a balanced and invigorating practice. We will practice a little bit of everything as we explore the theme of balancing oppositional movements. This cultivation of oppositional movements will create steadiness and ease in your asanas, distribute your mental attentiveness evenly, and develop balance in your practice.

SATURDAY MORNING
EXPLORING & DEVELOPING CORE STRENGTH

In this session you will awaken deep sensations and intelligence in the core of your body. You will do a fair share of abdominal work, developing strength and awareness in your center. You will then channel this work into your standing poses, twists, forward bends, mild backbends, and inversions (modifications will be given to those not inverting). In doing so, you will explore how using your core creates more integrated alignment of your body and sets the stage for greater steadiness and ease (yes, ease) in your practice.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON:
LEARNING TO LOVE BACKBENDS
(or at least comes to terms with them)

Backbends are difficult and even a little scary for many students. However, if you learn how to backbend with your whole spine—instead of just crunching your lower back—you may actually fall in love with them—or at least come to terms with them. As the title suggests, we will unlock the areas of the body that need to release tension (think shoulders, hips, upper-chest) in order to create even, enjoyable backbends.

SUNDAY: THE ECSTASY
(and hopefully not much)
AGONY OF HIP-OPENERS & ARM BALANCES

The grace of arm balancing, as with so many things in life, comes from balance not force. Similarly, the hips, which often hold the key to arm balancing, respond best to smooth, slow unfolding rather than brief bursts of zealous pushing. In this workshop you will untie those knots in your hips and learn how to approach arm-balances with patience. No, you don’t need to be terribly strong and flexible to do this work: you just need to be curious and willing to play…
